Algorithm development for design and analysis of experiments with mixtures

The algorithm for design and analysis of experiments with mixtures of lower complexity has been developed within Matlab environment. Algorithm has been successfully tested against commercial software packages (e.g. Design Expert, JMP, Minitab).


Porastom potrebe za primjenom metodologije planiranja i analize pokusa porasla je i potreba za odgovarajućim programskim paketima. Kako bi se pokusi izvodili efikasno odgovarajući programski paketi neophodan su alat. Razvoj komercijalnih programskih paketa okrenut je zadovoljavanju potreba industrijskog sektora, koji rijetko zahtjeva nestandardne planove pokusa. Naspram toga, znanstveno istraživački rad zahtjeva veći stupanj slobode u pristupu oblikovanja samih modela i planova pokusa. U radu je razrađen algoritam za planiranje i analizu pokusa sa smjesama za probleme niže kompleksnosti. Pri oblikovanju algoritma posebna pozornost posvetila se robusnosti i po-općenju kako bi algoritam bio nadogradiv daljnjim intervencijama. Teorija je obrađena u prvom dijelu rada i uključuje modele pokusa sa smjesama, njihove matematičke zapise i odgovarajuće grafičke prikaze. Drugi dio rada sadrži usporedbu najznačajnijih programskih paketa koji se bave problemom pokusa sa smjesama. Sastavljen je popis kriterija i odabrana su dva primjera iz prakse kako bi se mogli usporediti rezultati. Treći dio rada razrađuje koncept i razvoj algoritma, te njegovu primjenu i usporedbu dobivenih vrijednosti s vrijednostima dobivenih pomoću komercijalnih programskih paketa.


Manufacturing quality of axle assemblies for railway vehicles

This thesis explored manufacturing quality of axle assemblies for railway vehicles procured by the Đuro Đaković Special Vehicles. Extensive process capability analysis has been performed, enabling identification of improvement opportunities.


Land transport of passengers and material goods via railway vehicles is highly effective and efficient. Since railways pass through populated as well as unpopulated areas, it is of utmost importance that manufactured railway vehicles are of satisfactory quality. Strict quality specification of railway vehicles are set primarily for protection of human lives and accident prevention. Secondary reason are material savings on maintenance, fuel and other expenses that result from vehicle exploitation. Railway vehicles can be divided into locomotives and wagons, while wagons can be divided into passenger cars and freight wagons. This master thesis deals with freight wagons. Since aforementioned wagons are complex systems, specific element of the system is examined – wheelsets, especially freight wagon axles. Theory presented in master thesis is as follows: (i) quality definition; (ii) basics of quality management, including systems and frameworks; (iii) concise overview of railway vehicles; (iv) quality specifications of railway vehicles, especially of freight wagon; and (v) freight wagon axles. Case study, a practical part of master thesis, presents process capability analysis of manufactured freight wagon axles.


Assessing Engineering Students’ Ethicality

In higher educational institutions, ethics is the very core of the people that institutions are trying to morally shape. In a few years’ time, these students will be assigned to some work place where they will be forced to make decisions which can affect businesses and more importantly – human lives. In that respect, what seems like a simple doubt about right or wrong, becomes alarmingly significant and in times where economics and profit drive the thinking of the society, ethics are often overlooked. Universities attempt to instil ethical principles by providing courses on the topic, and through demonstrated behaviour of professors. This article presents introduction of a new class, devoted to ethics, as an application of stated approaches. The article shows some details of the class, with emphasis put onto the behaviour and decision that students showed during conducting given assignments. Findings have been divided into technical and ethical aspects.
